Hoping to avoid the special teams mishaps that doomed them against Archbold last week, the Bryan Golden Bears (1-1, 0-1 NWOAL) travel to Delta tonight to take on the Panthers (1-1, 0-1 NWOAL).
The Bears gave Archbold the ball in their territory seven times, resulting in seven scores. In order to succeed tonight, they will need to avoid the awful special teams play, turnovers and mistakes that plagued them last week. This week, junior Cody Keil will take over the offense as quarterback. Part-time QB Alex Nossaman will move permanently to wideout.
“They both can play QB,” said Head Coach Travis Cooper, “But having Alex at wide receiver gives us the best chance to win.”
For the third time in three years, Delta has a new head coach in Brett Smith. They lost in week #1 to Rossford and last week to Evergreen. Delta is led by Junior Quarterback Austin Alig and Senior Korbin Smith, who plays wide receiver, cornerback, as well as placekicking and punting. They run a spread offense and a 5-3 man defense, according to Cooper.
In order to win, the Bears will need to take care of the football. Special teams must improve dramatically, and the offense will need to move the ball and put it into the end zone.
Tonight’s game will be called on BMU by Jim Funderburg and Chris Malanga. Replay of the game will be Saturday at 7:00 PM and all next week (check listings).

The Golden Bears fought hard until the end, but early mistakes cost them as the Blue Streaks of Archbold came away with the win 49-21 at Golden Bear Stadium Friday night.
The story of the game was the short field that Archbold had all night. Thanks to turnovers and other mistakes, the Blue Streaks had seven touchdowns in the game - and all came when they started drives inside the Bears’ territory.
Archbold was led by David Rupp, who finished the game with 212 yards of total offense, evenly split between the pass and the run, and three touchdowns. He also led the charge on the defensive side of the ball, intercepting Bryan QBs twice. Jacob Fidler had 180 yards rushing and two TDs.
The Bears were led by Cody Keil who went 13-29 for 146 yards, including a 27 yard TD pass to Levi Fisher. Keil also had a 70-yard touchdown pass to Alex Nossaman that was called back due to a penalty.
Special teams is an area that needs a lot of work. The Bears had a high snap on a punt in the
first quarter, a blocked punt in the second, and gave up a long kickoff return right after their touchdown drive.
Bryan’s Alex Nossaman caught five passes for 58 yards, while Fisher had with five for 51 yards and a touchdown.
The biggest play of the night for Bryan came with the reserves in during the fourth quarter, when sophomore quarterback Cody Robinson went around the the right end for an 80-yard touchdown. It was the tenth longest rushing play in Golden Bear history.
With the loss, the Bears move to 1-1 on the season, and 0-1 in the NWOAL. The Streaks move to 2-0 and 1-0 in the NWOAL.
This game will replay Saturday night at 7:00, on BMU Channel 3 and several times throughout the week. Check this site for replay info.
Chris Malanga will sit down with Coach Travis Cooper on Tuesday for “Extra Point” where they will talk about the Archbold game and look ahead to next week’s contest at Delta.

Fresh off of a win at Van Wert, the Bryan Golden Bears look to get Head Coach Travis Cooper his first NWOAL win and his first win in Golden Bear Stadium. Standing in their way are the Blue Streaks of Archbold.
Fans of the team will note that Archbold’s legendary quarterback Gene Goehring is gone to graduation. But the Blue Streaks don’t rebuild - they reload. Senior David Rupp is a force to be reckoned with. Last week in the Streaks’ 38-20 win over Ayersville, Rupp rushed for 99 yards on 17 carries, with three rushing TDs and an INT return for a score.
Jacob Fidler returns at tailback for the Streaks. He rushed for 149 yards on 23 carries vs. Ayersville and was instrumental in the Blue Streaks’ 48-27 win over the Bears last year.
Last week, the Bears defeated Van Wert by a score of 13-10. They gave up a TD on a short drive after a fumbled opening kickoff, but didn’t allow another touchdown for the Cougars the entire game. To win this game, the Bears will need the exemplary play from the defense, led by Derrick Hughes and Jeremiah Dietrich. Last week, the pair made life miserable for Cougar quarterback Tim Hoverman. The offense will need to come to play this week. Alex Nossaman and Cody Keil will likely share the snaps once again. Whoever controls the tempo of the offense will win the game.

The Bryan Golden Bears got their first win of the Travis Cooper era as they traveled to Van Wert and defeated the Cougars 13-10 on Friday night.
Early on, it looked like it would be a high scoring game, as the Cougars took a 7-0 lead after a fumbled kickoff return by Shayne Combs. But the Bears came back with a completely unexpected look. Instead of projected starter Alex Nossaman, Junior Cody Keil led the team on the field. Keil shared snaps with Nossaman most of the night.
The Bears played well on both sides of the ball, particularly in the second half. Van Wert was able to have the last possession, but couldn’t eek out the win. Final score - 13-10 Bears. The Bears will play host to Archbold next Friday night.
